Hi, my name is Cathy Abene (pronounced Uh-Benny) and I am running for Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board District 6 Commissioner.  I want to represent you on matters that affect our most important community asset, our Minneapolis Parks.

The right experience. The right choice.

The job of Park Commissioner is to develop policies and to govern the use of parks.  I have spent my career as a civil engineer, the majority of which has been in the public sector acting in the role of steward of public assets.  As your commissioner I would bring significant experience in water resources, governance and oversight, capital planning, and operations.  If you’d like to learn more about my work, please visit here.

I am a University of Minnesota graduate and I’ve worked for Hennepin County and the City of Seattle.  For the last several years I’ve served as Principal Civil Engineer at the University of Minnesota where I have collaborative working relationships with colleagues at Minneapolis Parks, the City of Minneapolis, Hennepin County, the watersheds and more.

I live in Southwest Minneapolis with my wife Maren and our three children Moritz, Antonia, and Harriet (yes! we named her after the lake).  I grew up in the suburbs, but have called Minneapolis my home since 1985, living in the Wedge, Powderhorn, Phillips, Northeast and, for the last thirteen years, Southwest.  Like many of you, my family and I are daily users of the parks.  Our daughter works for Minneapolis Parks and our kids spent several years playing and thriving in Minneapolis Parks’ Rec Plus program and attending Minneapolis Public Schools.

Minneapolis is my home and I love it here, absolutely, and that’s a sentiment I know is shared by neighbors and friends.  Like any place, Minneapolis is not perfect but our starting point has always been strong.  Personally, I believe that to experience positive change and progress, we must uplift, not tear down.  Maya Angelou said, "A person cannot develop moral character unless they are valued."  Can this idea also be applied to a place?  I believe it can. I promise to meet people where they are and find the intersections where our values connect.  Let’s come together to sustain, maintain, and improve our parks for ourselves and our children.  Toward this end, I will do all that I can.

Please vote for me as your next MPRB District 6 Park Commissioner
